Chain link is the most cost-effective way to secure a boundary, contain a dog or enclose a commercial yard. It is also the fence most often installed badly — loose fabric, leaning terminal posts, sagging top rail. Done right, it is nearly indestructible.
Galvanized or vinyl-coated
Galvanized is the classic bright silver finish, zinc-coated for corrosion resistance. It is the most economical option and the standard for utility, commercial and back-boundary applications.
Vinyl-coated adds a fused PVC layer over the galvanized core, most commonly in black, and occasionally green or brown. Black chain link is worth the small premium in a residential setting for one reason: it visually disappears. Against a treeline or a hedge you stop seeing the fence and start seeing the yard.
What separates a good chain link fence from a bad one
- Terminal posts — end, corner and gate posts take all the tension and must be larger in diameter and set in more concrete than line posts. This is the corner most commonly cut.
- Fabric tension — the mesh is stretched with a come-along before it is tied off. Hand-pulled fabric is why so many chain link fences ripple.
- Tension bars and bands — the fabric is secured to terminal posts with a full-height bar, not woven back on itself.
- Top rail or tension wire — a continuous top rail keeps the line straight; a bottom tension wire stops a dog pushing underneath.
Common uses
Dog runs and pet containment, back and side boundaries, pool enclosures where code allows, tennis and sport courts, commercial yards, storage compounds, contractor sites and construction perimeters. Heights typically run 4ft to 6ft residentially, and higher for commercial work.

Is black chain link worth the extra cost?
For a residential yard, generally yes. Black vinyl-coated mesh recedes visually against greenery in a way galvanized never does, and the coating adds a further corrosion barrier. For a rear boundary or utility run, galvanized is perfectly sensible.
Can chain link keep my dog in?
Yes, with the right details. We add a bottom tension wire or bury the fabric slightly for diggers, and we specify a mesh size and height suited to the breed. Tell us about the dog at the estimate — it changes the specification.
What gauge should I choose?
9-gauge is the heavier residential and commercial wire and is what we recommend for anything that has to take real use. 11-gauge is lighter and cheaper and is fine for a low-traffic boundary.
How quickly can chain link be installed?
A typical residential run goes in quickly — often a single day for the fabric once posts have set. The posts still need their concrete to cure, so we normally split it across two visits.
